However, the now-iconic hat almost didn’t make it to the inauguration due to a last-minute mishap that nearly derailed her entire look.

In a recent interview, Eric Javits narrated the dramatic series of events that unfolded when the hat was shipped from Miami to New York for Melania’s final fitting. “I guess the hat arrived all crushed. It looked like it had been sitting in snow drifts for about a week,” he explained to WWD. Due to the damage, the hat couldn’t be repaired. “Obviously, I had to scramble to redo it. It couldn’t really be repaired, because of the construction of it. It was a little bit of a cliffhanger,” Javits added.

The designer worked tirelessly to create a new hat at the last minute. Speaking to Vanity Fair, Javits revealed that he managed to craft a replacement hat in less than four days. The second hat was delivered to Melania’s stylist, Herve Pierre, who personally transported it from Miami back to the First Lady for her final fitting in New York.
