Punjab may have missed the IPL trophy, but its food is always a winner. We attended a food festival, 'Punjab Da Swag', at Punjab Grill in Kala Ghoda, Mumbai to celebrate the unbeatable flavours of Punjabi cuisine. From sizzling starters to soulful curries, the special menu was a true tribute to the much-loved recipes from the region.
The food festival brought the authentic taste of Punjab right to the heart of Mumbai.
Sautéed in bold spices and finished with a gentle garnish, the menu had it all — tikkas, sabzis, and soothing beverages — enough to keep both the flavour and the festive spirit high.
As we looked at the ‘Punjab Da Swag’ menu, we read it twice to note it wasn’t “Swad” but “Swag”, noting that the dishes were presented in style, but keeping its richness alive.
Chef Govind Singh described the menu as a “Celebration of Punjabi spirit to the fullest,” with every dish inspired from the classic dishes prepared at Punjabi homes.
Echoing this emotion, the staff shared that Punjabi food is “not just a meal — it’s a mood of celebration, like a dhol-beat-filled thaali.” One bite, and it’s as if the rhythm starts playing in your head, transporting you straight to the streets of Amritsar for some buttery parathas or the gullies of Ludhiana for delicious mutton curry.
We started with Tikke de Rajkumar — smoky tikkas served sizzling hot on skewers, with the “wow” factor. The chef told us it was his favourite dish on the menu, one he personally enjoys preparing and devouring. Its Instagram-worthy look caught our eye, but it was the irresistible aroma that made us go for it. Served by Dashrath, the dish was perfectly cooked and well marinated, giving it an impressive masaledar taste with moderate spice levels.
Vivek Kumar, the resto bar’s food and beverage executive, informed us that the festival menu didn't have any vegetarian starter options. He made us try Veg Kurkuri and Palak Patta Chat from the regular menu, which were truly amazing.
We learned the dishes on the menu were limited and subject to availability. But for those who could never say no to chicken, mutton, or fish-based recipes, there was still enough to savour and be satisfied.
Dinesh brought us a comforting plate of Palak Chicken Curry (not boneless) paired with flaky, warm parathas — a classic combination that hit all the right notes. We paired it with a refreshing Aam Panna that blended the essence of raw mangoes and strong flavour of mint leaves.
We also tried Dhingri te dolma, a very desi dish which was romanticized on the festival menu, "Jadon Lucknow di nafasat te Punjab da swag ik thaal ch mil jaye (where Lucknow's purity meets Punjab's swag)." It was a wholesome dish with delicate mushrooms and soft paneer slow-cooked in a rich, spicy onion-tomato gravy. It carried the goodness of the desi ghee for a full-on "Punjab da feeling."
Restaurant manager Sandeep then informed us about another special menu entirely devoted to mangoes. Titled ‘Amb Ka Amrit’, the menu was loaded with mangolicious beverage options. We asked for a ‘Sippin’ on cheesecake’ to address our sweet cravings.
From the name, we expected a dessert-like drink — something close to a literal cheesecake in a glass. But to our slight disappointment, it turned out to be more of a vanilla-flavoured mango milkshake. It was buttery, but not quite the cheesecake experience we had imagined. Still, the presentation was a 10/10, with a generous slice of pulpy mango placed elegantly along the rim.
We concluded the meal with some paan, but not the usual way — we sipped paan shots in the Punjabi swag style, saying cheers to the foodie festive celebration.
