As Covid-19 cases start to rise once more in India, concerns over public health are growing. With over 4,000 active cases currently reported and 37 deaths, mostly among individuals with pre-existing health conditions, the need for caution is more important than ever.
While experts urge calm, staying informed and taking early preventive measures can help reduce the spread of the virus and protect vulnerable populations.
Here are 5 simple and effective precautions you can follow during this renewed Covid wave:
Wear mask in crowded or enclosed spaces
Even if mask mandates have been relaxed, wearing a face mask in public places like markets, malls, airports, or during travel on public transport can significantly reduce your risk of exposure. Opt for N95 or surgical masks for better protection, especially in areas reporting high infection rates.
Sanitize and wash hands frequently
Hand hygiene is still a key defence. Make it a habit to wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after coming home from outside or before eating. When you're out and about, carry an alcohol-based hand sanitiser to use on the go.
Avoid close contact and maintain distance
Physical distancing remains crucial. Avoid handshakes, hugs, and crowded gatherings wherever possible. Maintain a safe distance of at least 1 metre from others in public spaces, particularly if someone shows symptoms like coughing or sneezing.

Stay home if you feel unwell
If you’re experiencing symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, or fatigue, avoid stepping out and consult a doctor immediately. Isolate at home, monitor your oxygen levels, and get tested if symptoms persist or worsen.
Boost immunity and stay vaccinated
Eat a balanced diet, stay hydrated, and get enough sleep to help your immune system function well. Most importantly, ensure your Covid-19 vaccinations and booster shots are up to date. This is especially important for older adults and people with existing health issues.
