The festival occurs on the third lunar day (Shukla Paksha) of the Hindu month of Vaisakha. This year, Akshaya Tritiya is observed on Wednesday, April 30.

Akshaya Tritiya, also known as Akha Teej, is a revered festival that is observed by the Jain and Hindu communities across the country. The auspicious festival is observed in states like Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, and Odisha. Southern states, including Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh, also observe the festival with great enthusiasm. The festival is primarily dedicated to Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi, who represent wealth, prosperity, and good fortune. The day is also associated with the birth of Lord Parashurama, the sixth avatar of Vishnu.

Why is Goddess Lakshmi worshiped on Akshaya Tritiya?

On this auspicious day, devotees worship Goddess Lakshmi, who symbolises wealth, prosperity, and abundance. She is cherished for granting both material comforts and spiritual fulfillment to her followers. On Akshaya Tritiya, people seek her blessings through prayer and devotion. One popular legend associated with Akshaya Tritiya, known as the immortal third, is linked to the Akshaya Patra, a mystical vessel given to Draupadi by Lord Krishna.

This vessel was said to always provide food, representing Goddess Lakshmi's role as the source of endless sustenance. Another mythological belief is that on this day, Goddess Lakshmi emerged from the ocean during the Samudra Manthan or churning of the ocean. Her appearance symbolises her birth as a divine source of prosperity and reinforces her connection to Akshaya Tritiya.

On this auspicious day, devotees should wake up early in the morning and take a bath before sunrise. Clean your house with Ganga Jal (holy water) and put the idol of Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi in it. Offer sandalwood paste and flowers to Lord Vishnu, Lakshmi, and Kubera. One can perform the Madhusudhana ritual alongside Tulsi Archana and also chant the Sri Vishnu Sahasranama Stotra. Devotees should also keep the Kalash filled with filled in the fort of deities' idols.
