Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): In Madhya Pradesh, IVF completed its 40-year journey. There are around 50 private IVF centres in the state with none in the public health sector. The first IVF baby was born in Indore in 1984 while in Bhopal, the first IVF baby was born in 2006. World IVF day is observed on July 25. Dr Dhiraj Gada in Indore facilitated the first IVF baby while Dr Ranvir Singh and Dr Monika Singh facilitated the first IVF baby in Bhopal.
In February 2022, the government took initiative to open in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) centres in six medical colleges. The centres were to come up at Gandhi Medical College, Bhopal, Mahatma Gandhi Memorial (MGM) Government Medical College, Indore, Gajra Raja Medical College, Gwalior, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Medical College, Jabalpur, Shyam Shah Medical College, Rewa and Bundelkhand Medical College, Sagar.
The IVF is a complex series of procedures used to prevent genetic problems and assist in conceiving the child. Under IVF procedure, mature eggs are collected from ovaries and fertilised by sperm in a lab.
Dr Ranvir Singh, member of the State Surrogacy Board said, ‘There are 50 private IVF centres in Madhya Pradesh while in the public sector, initiative was taken but no concrete action has been taken in this direction so far. There was initiative to set up IVF centres with lab in six medical colleges in 2022.’
