Indore (Madhya Pradesh): Indore's acclaimed urban sanitation and innovation model emerged as the center of attention at the two-day National Conference on Urban Local Bodies held in Gurugram, Haryana.

Organised by the Lok Sabha Secretariat on July 3 and 4, the event brought together mayors, municipal commissioners, urban representatives from across India to share best practices and innovative strategies.

The conference was inaugurated by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, who emphasised the critical role of urban local bodies in fostering constitutional democracy and contributing to nation-building.

The theme of the conference was “Role of Urban Local Bodies in Constitutional Democracy and Nation Building”, with a forward-looking aim of building a developed India by 2047.

Representing Indore, Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargav and municipal commissioner Shivam Verma delivered an presentation on the city’s pioneering initiatives in cleanliness, public participation and sustainable development. The session drew praise from peers and experts alike, with many hailing Indore’s approach as a benchmark for other cities.

Among the key initiatives showcased by the Indore delegation were:

---Indore’s Cleanliness Model, which has earned the city top national rankings multiple times.

----Digital Plate Project, integrating technology into civic services.

---Public Participation Campaigns, fostering community ownership in city governance.

---Sustainable Waste Management, emphasizing circular economy practices.

---Green City Initiatives, aimed at enhancing urban livability and environmental health.

Indore’s presentations resonated strongly during the first-day sessions, which also featured contributions from major cities such as Bhubaneswar, Coimbatore, Lucknow, Pune, Surat and Visakhapatnam.
