Indore: Communities Unite As Man Renounces Faith He Adopted Years Ago | Shahaabuddin, a resident, had adopted Islam years ago under the influence of qawwali and spiritual practices.
Indore (Madhya Pradesh): In a heartening display of communal harmony, Indore’s Kulkarni Ka Bhatta area saw members of both Hindu and Muslim communities come together in solidarity.
The catalyst was the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir. What began as a personal transformation turned into a collective act of respect and brotherhood, reaffirming the city’s commitment to peace amid rising tensions.
Shahaabuddin, a resident, had adopted Islam years ago under the influence of qawwali and spiritual practices.
However, moved by the religion-based targeting of people in the aftermath of the Pahalgam attack, he chose to return to his original faith and took on the name Shyam Lal, affectionately known as Shaymu.

What set this transformation apart was the way it happened. Shaymu not only renounced Islamic practices, but also took the decision to replace the traditional qawwali events held at the local dargah with a recitation of Hanuman Chalisa, Sundarkand path, and a communal feast (bhandara).
Importantly, this event was attended and supported by members of both communities, who stood together to promote a message of unity and non-violence.
“Such a tragedy has never occurred in our country before. I felt I had strayed from my path, but after reflecting and speaking with local leaders, I knew it was time,” said Shaymu.
Former MIC member Jitu Yadav, who supported the decision, emphasised, “It’s not about religion, it’s about standing together against terror.”
