Neemuch (Madhya Pradesh): A group of environmental activists in Neemuch has revived a tree that was cut in half. The tree, known as Alstonia Scholaris, was cut down by employees of Neemuch Municipality six months ago.
It had been flourishing for 25 years before it was cut, leaving a one-foot stump. Despite complaint made by former councillor Dr Prithvi Singh Verma, no action was taken to save the tree.
Determined to give the tree a second chance, Dr Verma shared the situation with Jagdish Sharma from Sankalp Paryavaran Sanstha. Together with other environmental enthusiasts, they devised a plan to revive the tree.
They carefully placed the cut upper part back onto the stump using an iron sheet and applied a mixture of cow dung and Ayurvedic medicines. They then bandaged the tree, treating it like a patient in need of surgery.
After six months of care, the tree has shown remarkable signs of recovery. On this Environment Day, it was found that the upper trunk has successfully fused with the stump and new branches and light green leaves have emerged, signalling that the tree has regained its life.
Alstonia Scholaris, also known as Chatim Vriksha, is the state tree of West Bengal and holds cultural significance. This revival serves as a powerful reminder of the impact that dedicated individuals can have on the environment, encouraging everyone to take action to protect and nurture nature, said activists.
