After Delhi NCR, Ujjain Municipal Corporation To Relocate Stray Dogs To Shelters

Indore (Madhya Pradesh): The recent Supreme Court order on street dogs in Delhi-NCR has prompted Ujjain residents to demand that aggressive and dangerous dogs be removed from the city.

It is said, Ujjain Municipal Corporation has been receiving several calls with locals complaining against the menace being created by the stray dogs in the city. 

Notably, the Supreme Court issued orders on August 11, that all stray dogs in Delhi-NCR must be moved away from residential areas. It warned that strict action will be taken against any organisation that tries to stop this process. The order came after a rise in dog bite incidents in Delhi, some of which led to deaths from rabies. 

Ujjain Mayor holds meeting 

Following this, Ujjain Mayor Mukesh Tatwal met with officials to discuss solutions. In the past 18 months, about 30k people have been attacked by dogs and two people have died.

According to officials, the municipal corporation has carried out sterilization of 30,696 street dogs. 

The mayor also reviewed the functioning of the city’s dog shelter in Sadawal and ordered stronger measures to tackle the rising number of dog attacks and bite cases.

He also stressed speeding up sterilization and rabies vaccination drives for aggressive and stray dogs.

30,000 Dog Bite Cases in 16 Months

In the past 16 months, Ujjain, with a population of 7 lakh, has reported around 30k dog bite cases, with two deaths. In 2024, there were 19,949 cases, and from January to June 2025, 10,296 cases. This year, monthly cases included 1,417 in May, 1,552 in June, and 1,512 in July.

Regarding the matter, Mayor Tatwal said that following the Supreme Court order, action is being taken to capture stray dogs. Dogs that harm people will be moved to shelters. He added that many citizens have been calling after the court’s decision, and steps will be taken in consultation with senior officials.
