The streets of Freedom Park in Bengaluru echoed with compassion on Friday as animal lovers, activists, and citizens gathered to show solidarity with stray dogs in Delhi-NCR following the Supreme Court’s recent judgement on the issue.
Concerns Raised Over Supreme Court Order
The apex court’s ruling, which has stirred nationwide debate, has raised concerns among animal rights groups about the safety and treatment of community dogs in the capital region. In response, Bengaluru residents organised a peaceful demonstration under the banner “Bengaluru for Delhi NCR Strays.”
Placards and Pets Highlight Compassion
Volunteers held placards with messages such as “Dogs are a living proof of unconditional love” and “Release compassion, not cruelty.” Many participants also brought along rescued dogs, symbolising the bond between humans and strays. Passerby stopped to pet the animals, reflecting the city’s strong culture of empathy towards street dogs.
Animal Welfare Groups Fear Backlash
Animal welfare groups fear that the judgement could lead to increased hostility against strays and possible measures that may harm them.
The protest emphasised the need for awareness campaigns to educate citizens on the role stray dogs play in urban ecosystems. Organisers highlighted that strays often form an important part of neighbourhood life and that addressing the issue requires structured, compassionate approaches rather than reactionary steps.
Social Media Mobilises Citizens
Social media also played a very important role in mobilising people for the event. Hashtags such as #SaveDelhiNCRDogs and #SaveStrayDogs circulated widely online, on Instagram, Facebook etc., encouraging more persons to step out in support. The campaign underscored that while the judgement specifically addresses Delhi-NCR, its implications are national and could shape future policies affecting animals across India.
Renewed Call for Compassionate Action
The gathering at Freedom Park ended with a renewed call for collective responsibility, stressing that compassion for community dogs must extend beyond regional boundaries and become a shared civic value. It is very important for people to come together for this cause and protect stray dogs.
