In an innovative approach to promote cleanliness, the Varanasi Municipal Corporation has launched a unique initiative to deter littering and public urination. Under the direction of City Commissioner Akshat Verma, teams are now "honoring" individuals caught dirtying public spaces with garlands and applause, aiming to create a sense of public shame and encourage better civic behavior.
This novel campaign targets those urinating in the open, as well as individuals spitting after consuming paan or gutka in public areas like bus stations, railway stations, and near the Doordarshan Kendra. The teams explain to offenders that their actions tarnish the city's image and guide them towards nearby public toilets and urinals.
The initial results of this unconventional method are promising. Follow-up observations near the Doordarshan Kendra, for instance, show significant improvement in cleanliness over the past three days.
The initiative is part of a broader cleanliness drive across the city, where teams are continuously working to raise awareness about hygiene, discourage the use of single-use plastics, and encourage households to use two dustbins for waste segregation.
This innovative blend of public shaming and education aims to foster a cleaner Varanasi.
