Lucknow: BCA second-year student from Lucknow, studying at Graphic Era Hill University in Bhimtal, Uttarakhand, was found dead in her hostel room on Wednesday under circumstances her family believes point to murder following a ragging incident. The university has reported it as a suicide, while the family maintains she was killed for standing up to senior students harassing a junior.
Victim Had Reported Ragging Threats to Mother Before Death
The deceased, Vasavi Tomar, had spoken to her mother Binu Singh just a night before her death, informing her that senior students were attempting to rag her roommate, a nursing first-year student. Vasavi had intervened and reportedly received threats in return. She later sent her mother a video showing one of the seniors arguing with her in the hostel room.
Postmortem Suggests Strangulation, Not Hanging
By Wednesday evening, the university informed the family that Vasavi had died by suicide. She was reportedly found hanging in her hostel room and was declared dead at the Bhowali Community Health Centre. Her brother Ayush Singh claims the postmortem report confirms strangulation, not suicide.
Students Allegedly Threatened Into Silence
The family has also alleged that other hostel residents have been instructed not to speak about the incident and are being threatened into silence. The administration has so far not shared the suicide note it claims Vasavi left behind.
Her mother insists that her daughter, who aspired to study AI after completing MCA, could not have taken her own life and must have been attacked for defending a fellow student. She had also informed hostel authorities about the ragging attempt, but no action followed.
