Uttar Pradesh Records Decline In Maternal & Child Mortality Rates: MMR Drops To 151
The Neonatal Mortality Rate (NNMR) dropped from 28 to 26, while the Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) reduced from 38 to 37. The state’s sex ratio also improved modestly from 908 to 912. Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh has recorded a measurable decline in maternal and child mortality, with the Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR) falling from 167 to 151, according to the Sample Registration Survey (SRS) 2019–21 released on May 7 by the Registrar General of India.
The Neonatal Mortality Rate (NNMR) dropped from 28 to 26, while the Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) reduced from 38 to 37. The state’s sex ratio also improved modestly from 908 to 912. These figures reflect outcomes from targeted interventions under the National Health Mission (NHM), aligned with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s health priorities.
Dr. Pinky Jovel, NHM Mission Director, credited field workers and institutional improvements, stating, “Our goal remains: no mother should lose her life giving birth.” Key strategies included antenatal care, emergency obstetric services, and newborn health units.
