A thunderous explosion tore through a firecracker factory in Amroha's Atarasi village on Monday afternoon, killing four women and injuring nine others in a catastrophic industrial disaster. Among the deceased was a woman on her very first day at work. Such was the intensity of the blast that the victims’ bodies were mangled beyond recognition and their remains were scattered and burnt amid a landscape of devastation.
At 12:30 PM, the factory erupted into flames after a child reportedly lit a sparkler near stored explosives. What followed was a series of deafening explosions lasting nearly 15 minutes, reducing the structure to twisted metal, charred earth, and human tragedy. Witnesses described seeing plumes of black smoke rising like a funeral pyre into the sky, visible from several kilometers away.
The factory, operating amid forested terrain two kilometres from the village, collapsed almost entirely. Women were seen writhing in pain along dirt paths, their skin blistered and burnt. Rescue teams pulled bodies from the rubble, laying them on tin sheets outside the factory, covered hastily with cardboard.
District officials confirmed the factory was licensed, but operated under reportedly unsafe conditions.
DM Nidhi Gupta confirmed four deaths and announced an investigation committee. The victims, daily wage workers earning ₹300, were identified as Sarvesh, Rukhsana, Ruma, and Shahnaz.
As families mourn and officials probe, questions mount over negligence, safety lapses, and the deadly price paid by women seeking a modest livelihood, a tragic reminder that in some factories, profit is prioritized over life.
