Kolkata: Trinamool Congress (TMC) national secretary Abhishek Banerjee blames central government’s ‘failed foreign policy’ over the recent imposition of a 50 per cent tariff on Indian goods by former US President Donald Trump.

“Ask these questions to the one who has pictures with him. Ask these questions to the one because of whom Donald Trump came here to campaign and to those who went to Texas in 2019 to campaign for Trump. Those who have campaigned for Trump should be answerable for this diplomatic failure,” said Banerjee at the Kolkata airport before leaving for the national capital.

Taking further potshots, the TMC national secretary also mentioned, “A 50 per cent tariff has been imposed on India, and it will have consequences. Exports will be affected, especially in three industries including IT, pharmaceuticals, and textiles. The services around these sectors will also be impacted. Employment will decrease, and the Indian economy will be affected. I believe this is a diplomatic failure, and India should respond firmly to this.”

Criticising Donald Trump’s reported comment that ‘India’s economy is dead, Banerjee stated that he doesn’t agree with it.

“I also strongly condemn what Donald Trump said about India. He said that India’s economy is dead. I do not agree. No one has the power to kill the Indian economy. It is surviving on the love and affection of 140 crore Indians. I can say that the Indian economy is in the ICU. From bad, it has become worse in the last 10 years. And by imposing a 50% tariff, there will be substantial job loss. Exports will come down. And this is all because of the poor foreign policy of the Indian government,” mentioned the TMC national secretary.
