SC Rejects BJP MLA Kanwarlal Meena’s Plea, Orders Surrender; Disqualification Under RP Act Likely
The trial court had earlier sentenced Meena to three years in a case involving pointing a gun at an SDM and damaging government property.

A BJP MLA, Kanwarlal Meena, is on the verge of losing his Assembly membership as the Supreme Court on Wednesday rejected his Special Leave Petition (SLP). He has been ordered to surrender before the trial court within two weeks.
The trial court had earlier sentenced Meena to three years in a case involving pointing a gun at an SDM and damaging government property.
Notably, under the Representation of the People Act, 1951, an MP or MLA can be disqualified if convicted and sentenced to more than two years in prison.

During the Supreme Court hearing, the bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath, Sandeep Mehta, and Sanjay Karol rejected all arguments made by Meena’s lawyers and directed him to surrender within two weeks.
Meena had previously approached the Rajasthan High Court against the trial court’s verdict but failed to get relief.
The opposition Congress has already demanded action against Meena, citing provisions of the Representation of the People Act.
