Ranveer Allahbadia YouTube Row: Supreme Court Seeks Government Views To Regulate Obscene Content On Platform

With Ranveer Allahbadia row still hitting national headlines, Supreme Court of India on Tuesday (February 18) asked government's view about regulating obscene content on popular video-sharing platform YouTube.

The top court made observation about regulating obscene content on the platform while it heard Allahbadia's plea to club all FIRs against him.

Supreme Court bench of Justices Surya Kant and N Kotiswar Singh said that it would be 'very happy' if there were plans on the part on government to regulate content on YouTube.

"YouTubers are misusing the lack of regulation," the bench observed.

"There was this case of Youtubers...Union of India is a party...we would like to do something. If Government of India will willingly do it, we will be very happy. Otherwise, we are not going to leave this vacuum and this [...] area... the way it is being misused by so-called YouTube channels and all these things are going on...We have issued notice. So please request the Attorney General and the Solicitor General to be here on the next date of hearing. We would like to do something. We may not overlook the importance and sensitivity of the issue," said the bench as quoted by Live Law.

Relief To Allahbadia

The Supreme Court of India on Tuesday provided relief to Ranveer Allahbadia by staying his arrest. However, the top court lashed out at the YouTuber in some very strong words.

The court deemed Allahbadia's words and mind to be 'perverted'

"If this is not obscenity, then what is obscenity? There is something very dirty in his mind, which has been vomited by him in the program... He is insulting parents also. Why should the Courts favour him?," Justice Kant asked.

Even when Supreme Court gave Allahbadia interim protection from arrest, it asked him to co-operate with investigation fully. He has also been barred from taking part in similar shows for now.

Allahbadia has been asked to submit his passport to the police and he cannot leave the country without consent of the court.
