Lakhimpur Kheri: A disturbing incident of mob violence unfolded near Lakhahi village in Uttar Pradesh's Lakhimpur Kheri, wherein a Muslim man and four others were assaulted by kanwar yatris after their car’s side mirror accidentally brushed against a devotee.

The incident took place on Monday morning (August 4) amid heavy kanwar traffic on the Nighasan-Dakherwa State Highway, leaving five people injured, including the car driver, Islamuddin.

What Led to the Attack?

According to a report by Dainik Bhaskar, the scuffle escalated after Islamuddin’s car grazed the hand of a kawariya, causing his kanwar to fall on the road. Enraged by the incident, several kanwariyas surrounded the vehicle, broke its windows and attacked the occupants with sticks. the local residents soon intervened to disperse the crowd, preventing further harm. Four other Muslim men, who tried to rescue Islamuddin, were injured.

'They Surrounded the Car, Then Started Hitting Us’

As per the report, Islamuddin, a native of Muzaffarnagar and currently residing in a rented house in Lakhimpur, was on his way to pick up his wife, a primary school teacher in Lakhahi village, when the attack took place. Speaking to Dainik Bhaskar, he recalled the incident, saying, “There was a jam on the highway. Suddenly, many people surrounded my car and began beating it with sticks. When I stepped out, they started hitting me too.”

He added that the person whose hand was grazed by the mirror left the spot, but others incited the crowd by alleging that the kanwar had been fragmented by a Muslim. This further escalated the outrage. Islamuddin's wife told the publicaiton, “He was only coming to pick me up from school. I teach here, and he’s never had any conflict with anyone.”

No Complaint Filed, Vandals Not Identified Yet

According to the report, station in-charge Vivek Upadhyay confirmed that the incident took place during a routine police awareness drive. “The car driver was a passerby. We reached the spot and found the situation normal. No formal complaint has been lodged, and those involved in the vandalism and assault are yet to be identified,” he said.
