Mangaluru: A six-year-old girl died after a wall of her house collapsed due to a landslide triggered by heavy rainfall in Karnataka's Mangaluru district on Friday. The incident took place in Ullal taluk. Meanwhile, three other people are still trapped under the debris of the collapsed wall.
The deceased has been identified as Fatima Nayeema. After receiving the information, authorities reached the spot and launched a rescue operation. The girl was rushed to a hospital. However, she could not survive. As per IANS, two houses collapsed in the landslide.
Several areas have been inundated due to the heavy downpour in the district. In the Kallapu region, around 50 houses are facing severe waterlogging, prompting authorities to relocate many families to safer locations. The Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for heavy rainfall in the Mangaluru region until June 2.
In the wake of heavy downpours, the Mangaluru district administration declared a holiday for Friday for Anganwadi centres, as well as for primary and secondary schools, and government-aided, and unaided colleges.
District authorities have also issued directives for the locals to remain cautious. Due to the heavy rainfall, authorities in the coastal districts have imposed a ban on tourist visits to beaches, rivers, and waterfalls.
A red alert has been issued for five districts in Karnataka -- Mangaluru, Udupi, Kodagu, Chikkamagaluru, and Hassan -- till June 2.
