India’s vast railway network, known as the lifeline of the nation, does more than just connect cities and towns; it is a pillar of strength during national crises. Shiv Gopal Mishra, General Secretary of the All India Railwaymen's Federation, recently emphasized the critical role of railway workers in ensuring national security and responding to emergencies. He called the Indian Railways the country’s “second line of defence ,” highlighting the unwavering commitment of its workers during times of war and unrest.
Mishra recalled several key moments in India’s history when railway employees went above and beyond the call of duty. One of the most notable instances occurred during the 1962 Indo-China war, when Chinese forces made deep advances into Indian territory. Railway workers in the Lumding Division of the Northeast Frontier Railway displayed exceptional bravery when a train carrying vital supplies to the border was stranded. Despite being advised to abandon the mission due to the retreat of the army, the station officials refused to leave, staying with the train until it safely returned. Their dedication to their responsibilities and their country remains a shining example of loyalty and courage.
The 1965 war with Pakistan saw similar acts of valor. In Gadra Road, Pakistani forces relentlessly bombarded railway tracks, severely damaging them. Yet, railway workers, undeterred by the risk of gunfire, worked tirelessly to repair the tracks and ensure that vital ammunition and supplies reached their destinations on time. This spirit was echoed at the Amritsar and Wagah borders, where workers stood firm in the face of enemy aggression.
Today, as the geopolitical landscape continues to evolve, railway workers remain just as committed to ensuring the nation’s security. Mishra reaffirmed that in times of crisis, the nation’s welfare is the top priority for railway employees. "In times of crisis, we see only the nation," he declared. "No matter the hour, no matter the conditions, we are ready to transport ammunition, soldiers, and supplies to the borders. We are prepared to make the ultimate sacrifice."

Mishra also recalled a significant operation during the tenure of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, where railway workers successfully transported soldiers, ammunition, and essential supplies across the country within just 24 hours, showcasing their unmatched efficiency and dedication.
According to Mishra, message is clear: Railway workers stand as an unshakeable pillar of support for the nation, always ready to serve during any emergency or wartime crisis. Their devotion to duty and their readiness to act in the face of danger ensure that India’s security remains intact, no matter the challenges that lie ahead.
