New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his ‘Mann Ki Baat’ address on Sunday April 27, spotlighted the SACHET app, a newly launched disaster alert platform developed by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA). Modi emphasised the importance of the app in ensuring quick and accurate dissemination of early warnings across the country, describing it as a vital tool for public safety.

PM Modi mentioned that SACHET uses a CAP (Common Alerting Protocol)-based integrated alert system and is available pan-India. It facilitates "near real-time dissemination of early warnings through multiple means of technology using geo-intelligence," as described on its official website.

What Is SACHET App?

As per the official website, the SACHET app is designed to provide users with real-time alerts on disasters and severe weather conditions, drawing information directly from official government sources, including the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD). Citizens can receive notifications tailored to their current location or subscribe to updates for specific states or districts, ensuring they are promptly informed about emergencies.

In addition to alerts, the app offers daily weather updates, forecasts, and a resource library. This includes essential "Do’s and Don’ts" for handling various types of disasters, along with critical helpline numbers. One of the key strengths of SACHET is its satellite connectivity feature, designed to maintain communication capabilities during extreme emergencies when other networks may fail.

Multi-Language Support and Accessibility Across India

To ensure accessibility for a wide audience, the SACHET app supports 12 Indian languages, equipped with translation and read-out options. It is available for download on both Android and iOS platforms, as confirmed by the Meghalaya Government.

By promoting the app, Prime Minister Modi has urged citizens to stay prepared and take advantage of the technological innovations that can save lives during natural calamities.
