New Delhi: India is witnessing a quiet resurgence of COVID-19 cases, with health authorities flagging rising infections in several states amid the emergence of new virus strains NB.1.8.1 and LF.7, recently classified as “Variants Under Monitoring” by the World Health Organization (WHO).
The Union Ministry of Health, on Monday, May 26, released a full state-wise list of the active COVID cases across the country. Although most cases remain mild, authorities are stepping up surveillance to contain further spread, especially in metropolitan hotspots.
Kerala Tops Active Case Load, Mumbai Reports Daily Spike
According to the Union Health Ministry, India recorded 1,009 active COVID-19 cases as of 08:00 IST on May 26 2025. Kerala remains the most affected state, accounting for over 430 active cases. Officials report that while all patients are under home isolation, the state has confirmed two COVID-related deaths, both involving individuals with severe pre-existing conditions.
Maharashtra has seen a sharp rise as well, with 209 active cases currently being monitored and four reportedly dead. Mumbai alone registered 35 new cases on May 26, contributing to more than 240 infections detected in the month so far.
However, health officials clarified that recent fatalities were attributed to comorbidities rather than the virus itself. Cities like Hyderabad and Bengaluru are also witnessing moderate upticks, prompting renewed advisories for elderly citizens and those with weakened immunity.
Delhi Sees Steepest Rise in Nearly Three Years
The national capital recorded its highest single-day increase in COVID-19 cases in nearly three years. As per the Health Ministry's dashboard, Delhi now has 104 active infections. Authorities reassured that all patients are stable and recovering at home.
Other states such as Karnataka, Telangana, Gujarat, Rajasthan, West Bengal, and Uttar Pradesh have reported smaller clusters and upward trends, mainly in urban centres. In Bengaluru, the spike includes both infants and elderly, prompting a health advisory targeting vulnerable groups.
Despite the surge, officials maintain the situation remains under control.
