New Delhi: Former Jharkhand Chief Minister Shibu Soren died on Monday. He was 81 years old. Soren had been under treatment at Delhi's Sir Ganga Ram Hospital for more than a month. For the last few days his condition deteriorated. He was one of the founders of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM).
The news of Shibu Soren's demise was confirmed by his son and Jharkhand CM, Hemant Soren. "Respected Guru Dishom has left us all. I lost everything today," he wrote on his X post.
The JMM patriarch was admitted to the hospital in June with a kidney-related ailment.
Shibu Soren served as the Jharkhand CM thrice - first for 10 days in 2005 (from 2 March to 12 March), then from 2008 to 2009, and again from 2009 to 2010.
He was also elected to the Lok Sabha six times. Shibu Soren also served as a Rajya Sabha MP twice. Notably, his second term was ongoing at the time of his demise.
He was a prominent tribal leader of Jharkhand, who led JMM for nearly four decades. He became the party chief in 1987 and remained its president until April this year. He was also led the movement for a separate Jharkhand state.
Shibu Soren's Political Career:
He was born in Nemra village of Ramgarh district in undivided Bihar. He belongs to Santal tribe.
He was first elected to the Lok Sabha in 1980 from Dumka. Shibu Soren was subsequently elected to the Lok Sabha in 1989, 1991 and 1996 as well. In 2002, he was elected to the Rajya Sabha. However, after winning the Dumka Lok Sabha seat in a by-election, the JMM patriarch resigned from the Upper House. He was re-elected in 2004.
Under the Manmohan Singh government, Shibu Soren also became the Union Coal Minister. However, he was asked to resign following an arrest warrant in his name in the thirty-year-old Chirudih case.
In November 2006, Soren was found guilty in a twelve-year-old case involving the kidnapping and murder of his former personal secretary Shashinath Jha. In December 2006, he was sentenced to life imprisonment.
In August 2007, the Delhi High Court overruled the District Court and acquitted Shibu Soren.
