Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Slams Rahul Gandhi For Demanding 'Transparent Selection' Of Election Commissioners

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday hit out at Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for allegedly demanding a transparent selection of Election Commissioners involving the Chief Justice of India. Describing the Congress leader's demand as 'ironic', Assam CM said, "During Congress rule, appointments were made solely by the ruling government without any transparency."

"If the Congress truly believed in democratic integrity, why didn’t they implement these reforms in their decades of power? This hypocrisy highlights their political posturing—preaching transparency now after years of opaque governance. The people of India can no longer be misled by such double standards. Practice what you preach before demanding trust," he said.

Himanta Biswa Sarma's response came shortly after, Rahul Gandhi, while speaking during the Motion of Thanks to the President's address in Lok Sabha on Monday, raised serious concerns about alleged irregularities in Maharashtra's voter rolls, claiming an unusual surge in voter registrations between the Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha elections.

Rae Bareli MP also criticised recent changes in the Election Commissioner selection process, particularly the removal of the Chief Justice of India from the selection committee. "Now it's just the Prime Minister, Home Minister, and me. Two to one. What's the purpose of me attending the meeting?" he questioned, suggesting the new arrangement undermines the selection process's fairness.
