Kolkata: A second student from South Calcutta Law College has come forward with disturbing allegations against Manojit Mishra, the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) functionary and prime accused in the recent gang-rape case of a 24-year-old first-year law student.
This time, the survivor, a second-year student, accused Mishra of molesting and threatening her during a student gathering in October 2023.
The latest revelation only adds to the growing scrutiny around Mishra, who was arrested last week along with three others and is currently in police custody until 8 July. The accused, a former student of the same college and now the organising secretary of the South Kolkata district TMCP, has allegedly maintained a stronghold on campus long after passing out.
2023 Allegations of Molestation
According to a report by India Today, the survivor alleged that Mishra forcibly entered a vacant room she had stepped into to take a phone call, locked the door, and began molesting her while under the influence of alcohol and cannabis.
“He came towards me aggressively, pulled me by my hair, and dragged me to the balcony of the room. He then started undressing me,” she said, as quoted by the publication, adding that Mishra dared her to scream louder. A senior female student knocking on the door interrupted the assault, causing him to flee.
The student said she was too afraid to speak out then, but the recent gang-rape complaint gave her the courage to come forward. Her account now becomes the second formal accusation of sexual violence against Mishra.
Mishra’s Long History of Violence and Intimidation
Mishra’s campus record is filled with violent episodes. First expelled in 2013 for alleged criminal activities, he re-enrolled in 2017, only to again face disciplinary action after reportedly ransacking the college.
Even after his graduation in 2022, Mishra maintained an intimidating presence on campus, with both female and male students alleging harassment, bullying and extortion. He was also arrested in April this year for assaulting a police officer and accused of attempting to kill a student in 2023.
