Air India Pays ₹25 Lakh Interim Compensation To Families Of 147 Crash Victims, Says It Will Be Adjusted Against Final Amount

Air India announced that it has released interim compensation to the families of 147 victims who died in the AI-171 crash that killed 260 people in Ahmedabad. However, the airline announced that the interim payment will be adjusted against any final compensation.

After more than a month of releasing interim payment of Rs25 lakh to the affected families to help them meet their immediate financial needs, Air India revealed on Saturday that it has provided the interim compensation to the families of 147 victims, including the deceased passengers and those who lost their lives at the crash site. It added that the requisite documents of 52 others have been verified, to whose families the interim compensation will be released progressively.

Notably, the airline’s chief executive officer Campbell Wilson had announced on June 14, two days after the crash, that the interim compensation is in addition to the Rs1 crore support announced by Tata Sons. In a statement on Saturday, the airline said that the interim compensation will be adjusted against the final compensation amount. The airline also did not announce anything related to the compensation provided to the crew members.

“Air India stands in solidarity with the families and those affected by the AI171 accident. We continue to mourn their loss and remain fully committed to providing support during this difficult time,” read the statement from Air India.

Notably, Tata Sons constituted a public charitable trust in Mumbai on July 19  with a fund of Rs500 crores dedicated to the victims of the unfortunate accident of Air India plane AI-171 in Ahmedabad. The ‘AI-171 Memorial and Welfare Trust’ will offer Rs1 crore compensation to the victims, support for rebuilding the BJ Medical College’s hostel and assistance for alleviation of any trauma or distress suffered by the first responders, medical and disaster relief professionals, social workers and governmental staff who provided invaluable institutional support and service in the aftermath of the accident.
