Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief and former Delhi Chief Minister on Thursday (December 12) announced that the Delhi state government cabinet passed a proposal to provide Rs 2100 to women in Delhi per month.
The significant announcement from Kejriwal has come as the Delhi state approaches assembly elections which are expected to take place early in the year 2025.
It may be argued that AAP has taken a page from Mahayuti's book in Maharashtra. The ruling alliance registered a landslide victory in recently concluded Maharashtra Legislative Assembly Election 2024. Many political experts told various media outlets that the Ladki Bahin scheme, launched by the Mahayuti just months before the elections had a huge role to play in the alliance's victory.
The Aam Aadmi Party has maintained a solid grip over power in Delhi though its tussle with successive lieutenent governors has made governance a thorny issue.
Currently, the 70-member Delhi Legislative Assembly has 58 Aam Admi Party MLAs. BJP has 7 MLAs while five seats are vacant.
Arvind Kejriwal was Delhi chief minister for nine years between 2015 and 2024. In the month of September this year, he stepped aside to make way for Atishi, who is the current chief minister of Delhi state.
Reactions from AAP leaders began trickling in soon after Kejriwal made the announcement.
"Congress and BJP could not think of these things and when the public asks for these things they only make excuses. Kejriwal announced this scheme today and after the elections, women will be given Rs 2100..." said former Delhi deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia.
