‘Whole Lot Of Rubbish’: Somy Ali On Kind Of Films In Bollywood Today (Exclusive)

Somy Ali, a well known face in the world of entertainment and films, recently got in an exclusive chat with The Free Press Journal speaks about her return to the films and termed the films in this day and age as ‘Russian roulette.’

Revealing that there has been no reciprocation for work, the actress says, “There has been no reciprocation given I am in the Vivek and Sonu box now. But I would love to come for a holiday even do a film where there’s a message. There’s an old film of Kakaji called Bawarchi. I seriously wish someone would remake that with Shah Rukh playing Rajesh Khanna’s role. It’s a beautiful script and not one where I have to pretend to go to get water or use the restroom every ten minutes with the vulgarity depicted in this era of films.”

The actress states that the films today cannot be watched with the family and says, “Even up to Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham films were made to be watched with your elderly family members. Nowadays it’s like playing Russian roulette. Is the next scene going to be watchable is their going to be a kissing scene or foul language is all I think if I am with my mom or extended family. They can’t separate what is vulgar and sexy. Zeenat could even in that era and so did Parveen beautifully. These two defined the distinction between vulgarity and sexy, in accordance to the requirements of the scenes. Now it’s a whole lot of rubbish without any substance. Sure, there are my favorites like Thappad, Pink, Piku, Lunch Box, Fashion, or anything with Bhumi, Taapsee and Alia. My friends in Miami who are originally from India text me to watch a certain film saying it’s a “Somy movie” as in Gangubai. That’s literally what I do in real life with my NGO and oh boy did she do justice to that character like no one else ever could. I am still in complete awe of her after watching her in that movie. I like movies with depth and steering towards making our upside down world with its inhabitants see clearly. The fluff films add nothing but more blur to their already impaired visibility. Dear Zindagi was a necessary film and I am so proud of Shah Rukh for doing that film and Alia was her usual best. As we approach 2025 the demographic has outgrown the garbage fed to them due to the birth of social media. They have the universe in their “smart phones” and cannot be duped. “
