In a shocking incident, South Korean actor Song Young-Kyu was found dead inside a parked car in Cheoin-gu, Yongin, south of Seoul, in the early hours of Monday. His death comes days after he was arrested in a drink-and-drive scandal near Yongin.
Song was 55 at the time of his death. He is survived by his wife and two daughters.
As per reports, Song was discovered by locals and they informed authorities that the actor was found unresponsive inside a parked car in Yongin.
His cause of death is yet to be ascertained.
It is to be noted that the actor was arrested on June 19 in a drunk driving case. On being tested, his blood alcohol concentration was found to be 0.08 per cent, and he reportedly drove in that state for 5 kilometer, which is enough for license revocation under South Korean law.
He was referred to prosecution without detention. In the aftermath, Song stepped down from the stage production of Shakespeare in Love, and was removed from ENA's The Defects, and SBS's The Winning Try.
The Defects, which he had already shot for, issued a statement stating that his screen time would be restricted following the controversy.
Song made his stage debut in 1994, with the children's musical, Wizard Mureul, and built a steady three-decade career across theater, film and television.
He was best known for supporting roles in projects like Trick, Stove Leave, Hyena, and others. It was his role in Extreme Job -- one of the highest-grossing films in Korean cinema -- that cemented his place in the Korean film industry.
Song's family is yet to issue an official statement after his death.
