Netflix Ends Password Sharing In India: What Does It Mean For Desi Audience?

Ardent Netflix users woke up confused on Thursday morning after the streaming giant announced that it has ended 'password sharing' in India. "Starting today, we will send an email to members who are sharing Netflix outside their household in India," the company said in a statement.

This announcement comes after Netflix had announced earlier in May that it has planned a global crackdown on the menace of password sharing among its users.

The streaming giant faced a rough patch last year, and with this move, it is planning to amp up its business and get back in the game.

Netflix ends password sharing in India

Netflix has several plans for its customers -- be it based on the number of screens or based on the device. Users can opt to pay less if they wish to operate Netflix only on their mobile phones.

In the same way, they can choose the number of screens on which they can view Netflix simultaneously.

With the end of password sharing, Netflix will henceforth allow only those living in the same household to share their passwords and have their own profiles on the website/app.

In the statement released by the streaming giant, it said, "We recognise that our members have many entertainment choices. It is why we continue to invest heavily in a wide variety of new films and TV shows - so whatever your taste, mood or language and whoever you are watching with, there is always something satisfying to watch on Netflix."

What does this mean for desi audience?

The move by Netflix will ensure that the person subscribing to the streaming giant can no longer share the password to the account with anyone else except for the people in their household.

The members of the household can use the same account on the go. "Everyone living in that household can use Netflix wherever they are -- at home, on the go, on holiday," the statement read.

It further promised brand new features like Transfer Profile and Manage Access and Devices.

This also means that if anybody else outside of a user's household is using their account, then they will now have to transfer their profile to a new account.

Netflix has now mandated that the primary user must set up a Netflix household, which ideally refers to the device which is most used to watch Netflix.

Now the devices which use the same internet connection as this 'Netflix household device' will be considered to be living in the same household, and will thus be able to share password and use a single account.
