After nearly 18 months away from the limelight, BTS' Jung Hoseok, aka J-Hope, is back with a bang! From chart-busting songs to world tours, the rapper-dancer has only made headlines every single day. Post-discharge, in his first detailed interview, J-Hope opened up about the emotional and mental transformation he experienced during his mandatory military service in South Korea.
Speaking with Apple Music 1's Zane Lowe, J-Hope candidly reflected on his personal growth, the value of service, and how his passion for music endured even in uniform.
'It was a very important part of J-Hope's or Jung Ho Seok's life'
For an artist whose influence transcends borders, stepping away from the global spotlight wasn't just a career pause; it was a pivotal life chapter. Yet, for J-Hope, this wasn't a hiatus but a deliberate step grounded in responsibility. "I think it’s only natural for young people in South Korea to take on this responsibility," he said, adding, "I thought it was a very important part of J-Hope's or Jung Ho Seok's life. After all, I am a proud citizen of South Korea."
The time away offered him something the global stage could not: a chance to reset. From training grounds to barracks, J-Hope found himself surrounded by people from every background imaginable. That stark contrast to his usual life brought clarity. "It’s a different experience. Also, in reality, I've learned a different life," he shared. "But also, you know, a year and a half is actually not a very short time."
'There was a part of me who never really let go of my love for music'
Even with the intense routine of military life, music never left his side. Though he wasn't performing or recording, his creative spirit never dimmed. "Even though I was in the service, I think there was a part of me who never really let go of my love for music," he expressed.
J-Hope is now the second BTS member to complete his military service, following Jin's return earlier. With RM, SUGA, Jimin, V, and Jung Kook still serving, anticipation is building toward the group's much-awaited full reunion, slated for June 2025.
