Bollywood's Mr Perfectionist, Aamir Khan, revealed that he learnt the Marathi language at the age of 44, despite having studied in a school where the language was taught. He revealed how he thought it was shameful to not know one's state language and that is when he decided to learn it.

"When I was around 44, I realised that I do not know the Marathi language. Although Marathi is taught in school, I did not pay much attention. I felt that it was a matter of shame that I did not know my Rajyabhasha," the actor told IANS.

"Then, I hired a Marathi teacher and I learned Marathi from him. Now, I am able to speak decent Marathi," he added.

Highlighting the importance of knowing multiple languages, Aamir went on to say, "I feel, whichever field you are in, the more languages you know, the more beneficial it will be. So, it is in your interest to know as many languages as you can."

"I am a little weak when it comes to languages. It takes me a lot of time to learn a new language," he admitted.

Other celebs react to Marathi language row

The Marathi language debate had picked steam in the state a few days ago, after several incidents of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) workers abusing and assaulting common public for not speaking Marathi had surfaced online.

Several celebs, including Badshah, Ranvir Shorey, Shilpa Shetty, Hindustani Bhau, and others, had reacted to the row. While Badshah and Hindustani Bhau had urged MNS workers to not assault common people over the language, Shilpa had stated at an event that one must not try to stir controversies using the topic.

Bhojpuri actor Nirahua had openly challenged Maharashtra politicians to oust from the state for not speaking in Marathi.
