Contrary to June and July, which are usually crammed with classes, August provides several holidays, giving students an opportunity to relax and reconnect with festivals. Raksha Bandhan – 9th August 2025
Schools in many of the north Indian states, such as Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, and Haryana, will be closed on August 9th on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan. The festival celebrating the union of siblings is commonly celebrated and often leads to a holiday for students.
Jhulan Purnima – 13th to 17th August 2025
In eastern India, particularly West Bengal and Odisha, Jhulan Purnima will be celebrated from August 13 to 17. Schools there are expected to remain closed during the period as the festival celebrates the devotional love between Lord Krishna and Radha.
Independence Day – August 15, 2025
On August 15, Independence Day, it is a national holiday; schools, colleges, and government offices will be closed. The day will be celebrated through the hoisting of the flag, cultural events, and commemorative activities in all educational institutions across the state.
Janmashtami – August 16, 2025
Only a day after Independence Day, Janmashtami will fall on August 16, resulting in another day of holiday for students in states like Gujarat, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh. The festival is celebrated to welcome the birth of Lord Krishna, and it consists of fasting, prayers, and temple festivities.
Onam – August 26 to 28, 2025
Kerala students will have a long holiday for Onam, from August 26 to 28. This is the state's most significant festival and involves grand feasts, flower carpets, folk games, and cultural events.
Ganesh Chaturthi – August 27, 2025
Schools will also be closed on August 27 for Ganesh Chaturthi, especially in states such as Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, and Telangana. The festival, which commemorates the birthday of Lord Ganesha, is characterised by vibrant processions and collective prayers.
Sundays – Weekly Holidays Remain
Except for festival-related holidays, all Sundays in August will be weekly holidays for schools nationwide.
