Mumbai: The University of Mumbai (MU) on Friday announced the launch of a new joint degree programme in MS in Chemical Sciences, in collaboration with the prestigious Saint Louis University in the United States.
This marks the latest addition to the university’s international academic offerings, following what it described as the enthusiastic response received for its existing joint degrees in Data Analytics and Cybersecurity.
From the academic year 2025–26, students enrolling in the MS in Chemical Sciences joint degree programme will undertake the first year of study, consisting of two semesters, at MU, while the second year will be completed at Saint Louis University. As part of this programme, students will also have the opportunity to undertake internships and practical training.
Upon successful completion, graduates will receive degrees from both institutions. According to MU, the programme is designed to leverage the strengths and expertise of both universities to enhance academic excellence and offer students exposure to diverse research methodologies, advanced laboratory facilities, and global perspectives in the field of Chemical Sciences.
The official announcement was made at a dedicated event attended by several dignitaries from both institutions. Representing MU were Vice-Chancellor Prof Ravindra Kulkarni, Pro Vice-Chancellor Dr Ajay Bhamare, Registrar Dr Prasad Karande, Director of Students’ Development Dr Sunil Patil, and Chemistry Department faculty Dr Vishwanath Patil and Dr Suresh Pawar. Joining from Saint Louis University were Vice President of Enrollment Management Robert Reddy, Senior Strategic Advisor Sundar Kumarasamy, and Director of the Global Grad Initiative Anushika Jain.
Speaking at the event, Prof Kulkarni said, “With this joint degree, students will have access to a wide spectrum of learning avenues in Chemical Sciences, ranging from subject-specific study branches to research methodologies and state-of-the-art laboratory equipment. The collaboration will help achieve impactful outcomes in academic and research areas by integrating infrastructure, expertise, and advanced resources from both institutions.”
He further noted that this agreement marks a significant step towards internationalisation in higher education and opens new avenues for students in emerging global domains of chemical research. “The joint priorities of India and the US in the field of scientific research will help expand students’ global understanding and career opportunities,” he added.
The initiative follows the successful rollout of MU’s joint degrees in Data Analytics and Cybersecurity, for which 10 students were admitted in the academic year 2024–25. These students are now preparing to commence the third semester at Saint Louis University and have been granted 50% fee waivers through scholarships.
“The university’s National and International Linkages and Student Support Centre has been actively assisting students with visa facilitation, expert counselling, document attestation, scholarships, and accommodation support as they transition to the US for their studies,” MU said in a statement.
