Mumbai will witness the launch of India's first privately funded institute that is solely focused on mathematical research, the Lodha Mathematical Sciences Institute (LMSI), on August 17, 2025. Based in New Cuffe Parade, Wadala, LMSI is set to emerge as a world-class center for pure and applied mathematics, backed by the Lodha Foundation.
The foundation has received an initial endowment of ₹20,000 crore (USD 2.5 billion), from founders of Lodha group.
Renowned number theorist Professor Vijaya Kumar Murty will be the institute's founding director. A 12-member scientific advisory board will guide the academic vision of the institute. The board comprises some of the most renowned mathematicians from around the globe, including Manjul Bhargava (Princeton University, Fields Medal 2014), Sourav Chatterjee and Yakov Eliashberg (Stanford), and Kavita Ramanan (Brown University).

LMSI’s first academic programme, beginning this month, will focus on arithmetic statistics, led by Bhargava himself. The institute plans to run similar six-month thematic programmes regularly, alongside hosting an annual Indian Congress of Mathematicians.
Information regarding student intake and future expansion will be announced later, but the ambition of LMSI is clear: to establish India as a global powerhouse in mathematical sciences. LMSI is founded on the ideology of the Lodha Foundation: "Do Good, Do Well," which philosophy is now driving one of India's most promising academic ventures.
