In a major academic expansion, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi has announced the launch of a new Bachelor of Science (BS) in Chemistry programme. The course will be open to students who qualify for the JEE (Advanced) 2025 examination, and admissions will be routed through the JoSAA 2025 portal.
Bridging Science and Engineering
The newly launched programme aims to introduce multi-disciplinary learning early in undergraduate education. According to Prof. S. Nagendran, Head of the Department of Chemistry at IIT Delhi, the programme is designed to fill a critical gap in higher education: "addressing the need to introduce multi-disciplinarity at an early level in chemical science education while simultaneously preserving the comprehensive and in-depth chemistry training expected from a pure sciences graduate. It has been seen over time that, on one hand, engineering graduates frequently lack the depth of fundamental scientific knowledge necessary to conduct research in the pure sciences, while, on the other hand, pure chemistry graduates sometimes overlook engineering fundamentals.”
Curriculum Designed for the Future
Prof. Ravi P. Singh, Programme Coordinator for BS in Chemistry, elaborated on the curriculum structure:
Year 1: Students will study common foundational courses, similar to other B.Tech programmes, covering science and basic engineering concepts.
Year 2: The focus shifts to core chemistry courses, helping students build strong domain expertise.
Year 3 & 4: Multidisciplinary electives and research-oriented learning come into play, with options to explore real-world applications and emerging fields.
A distinctive highlight of the programme is the option to pursue a Minor in another department, allowing students to customise their learning paths.
Training Future Leaders in Chemistry and Technology
This BS in Chemistry programme is positioned as a launchpad for careers in diverse sectors such as:
- Pharmaceuticals
- Semiconductors
- Advanced Materials
- Manufacturing & Automotive
- Defence and Petrochemicals
- Oil & Gas and Chemical Consulting, etc.
