CFA Level 2 May 2025: As the CFA Level 2 May 2025 exams approach—scheduled between May 21 and 25—aspirants are entering the most crucial phase of preparation. While stress and revision go hand in hand during this time, Rajesh Singh, Growth Head – Global Certifications at Imarticus Learning, says success now lies in refining your strategy, not just putting in more hours.
“In the last week, avoid studying anything new. Focus on revising key topics like Equity, Financial Statement Analysis (FSA), Fixed Income, Portfolio Management, and Ethics. These alone contribute around 70% of the exam weightage, and mastering them is critical,” said Singh.
To aid quick revision, Singh advises using memory tools that help retain complex concepts efficiently.
“Use mind maps, flashcards, formula sheets, and quick sheets. These save time and improve retention, especially when revising during short bursts,” he noted.
Don't skip mocks - Analyse your weak spots
Another strong recommendation: practice with full-length mocks.
“Solve at least 4 mock exams before the actual test. If your average score is less than 60%, go back and identify which modules are dragging your performance down. Work specifically on those,” said Singh.
But mocks aren’t just for scoring—they’re diagnostic tools, too.
“Post-mock analysis is key. See which sections consistently show lower accuracy. Revisit concepts from those modules. It’s not about quantity of study now—it’s about quality,” he stressed.
Application over memorisation
Level 2 exams are designed to test application-based knowledge through vignette-style MCQs. This makes your ability to apply concepts under time pressure more important than simply knowing definitions.
“Unlike Level 1, you can’t depend on rote learning. The case-based structure of questions requires understanding the context and applying logic. You’ll encounter a lot of numericals that span multiple concepts,” explained Singh.
This is especially true for sections like Quantitative Methods, Derivatives, and Fixed Income.
“These areas are formula-heavy. You must know not just the formulas but also the conditions under which they apply. Also, learn to use your financial calculator efficiently to save time on calculations,” he added.
Don't take ethics lightly
Many students tend to brush aside Ethics, believing it's just theory. That’s a mistake, says Singh.
“Ethics questions are often tricky, with subtle distinctions in scenarios. Misinterpreting a question can cost you. And because the CFA Institute gives weight to borderline cases based on your Ethics performance, a strong Ethics score can help you pass, especially if you’re hovering around the minimum passing score.”
What to do on exam day
With just days to go, Singh urges candidates to focus on physical and mental readiness.
“Don’t study on the day of the exam. It’ll only increase your anxiety. Instead, get a good night’s sleep, have a light breakfast, and arrive early at the centre,” he advised.
The exam format includes 22 item sets (vignettes) and 88 multiple-choice questions, divided into two sessions of 2 hours and 12 minutes each.
“Manage your time well. Take 4–5 minutes to read a vignette and 1.5 to 2 minutes per question. Also, take the optional break between sessions. It helps to refresh and reset,” Singh said.
Mental game matters
For students still doubting themselves or feeling unprepared, Singh had practical advice.
“If your mock scores are over 60%, you’re in a good place. Stay consistent and don’t let panic take over. At this point, it’s not about covering everything—it’s about being steady in what you already know.”
To keep stress at bay, Singh recommends short, focused revision blocks with regular breaks.
“Solve 5–6 vignettes in one sitting, then take a break. Do what keeps you centred—take a walk, meditate, listen to music. Don’t compare your prep with others. It’s your journey.”
And if you’re still far from confident?
“Don’t panic. You still have time. Focus on high-weightage topics, revise with formula sheets, and work smart, not hard. You don’t need to know everything to pass,” Singh said.
