The technology stack of GSPay has been acquired by PhonePe. Developed by conversational engagement firm Gupshup, GSPay is a Unified Payments Interface (UPI)-based payments platform.

Digital Payments can be enabled for users of new feature phones in India. In the coming quarters, PhonePe plans to customise and expand the GSPay technology and launch its own UPI app for feature phones. GSPay is built on UPI123PAY. It is a platform created by NPCI to support UPI payments on feature phones.

Key UPI services will be supported by the app such as peer-to-peer transfers, offline QR payments, and receiving funds via mobile numbers or self-generated QR codes.

Making UPI fully interoperable between feature phones and smartphones is the goal of PhonePay. By targeting crores of Indians who still use basic mobile phones, the initiative is expected to support greater financial inclusion.

The Co-Founder and CEO of PhonePe, Sameer Nigam, said he was excited to bring UPI payments to India's extensive feature phone user base. He also explained that the segment has been underserved and he aimed to integrate them into the digital payments ecosystem.

India had around 24 crore feature phone users in 2024, according to industry estimates. Over the next five years, 15 crore feature phone shipments are expected. They will offer a large user base for digital expansion.
