India Bolsters Defence Exports, Ships Second BrahMos Batch To Philippines Via Sea

New Delhi: India has successfully dispatched the second batch of its advanced BrahMos supersonic cruise missile system to the Philippines. Unlike the first delivery made via an Indian Air Force transport aircraft in April 2024, this shipment is being sent through sea routes, showcasing India's expanding logistics and delivery capabilities in the defence export sector. This milestone marks continued progress in the $375 million defence agreement signed between New Delhi and Manila in 2022.

Part of a Landmark Defence Deal

The deal includes the delivery of three complete BrahMos missile batteries, along with associated launchers, command and control systems, and other related equipment. The first battery had been airlifted to the Philippines as part of India’s commitment to timely deliveries and strategic partnership development. With the second battery now en route by sea, India is not only fulfilling its contractual obligations but also demonstrating flexibility in logistics and defence diplomacy.

BrahMos: A Technological Marvel

The BrahMos missile is co-developed by India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Russia’s NPO Mashinostroyenia. This supersonic cruise missile can fly at speeds nearing Mach 2.8 and is capable of being launched from land, air, or sea platforms. Widely considered India’s flagship defence export, BrahMos is also undergoing rapid indigenisation, with reports indicating that nearly 83% of its components are now sourced domestically.

Rising Global Demand for BrahMos

The Philippines was the first international customer to sign a formal agreement for the BrahMos system. However, several other nations, particularly from the ASEAN bloc and the Middle East, have expressed interest in procuring the missile. In February 2025, DRDO Chairperson Samir V. Kamat confirmed ongoing discussions with countries like Indonesia and hinted at broader regional interest. This surge in demand signals a growing global recognition of India’s defence manufacturing prowess.
