Mumbai: Bharat Coking Coal Ltd (BCCL), a Coal India subsidiary, is coming up with its first IPO. The company filed its draft papers (DRHP) with SEBI for a 100 percent offer for sale of 46.57 crore shares, which is 10 percent of its total equity. The proceeds from this IPO will go to Coal India, the parent company.

Key Managers and Listing Info

IDBI Capital and ICICI Securities are managing the IPO as Book Running Lead Managers (BRLMs). KFin Technologies will be the registrar. The price band, lot size, and anchor investor details will be decided later during the book-building process.

Production Performance

BCCL achieved record-high production in FY25 with 40.50 million tonnes of coal, up from 30.51 million tonnes in FY22. It produced 38.89 MMT of coking coal in FY25 and 1.61 MMT of non-coking coal. Over 98 percent of coal is extracted using opencast mining.

Mining and Technology

BCCL runs 32 mines: 25 opencast, 3 underground, and 4 mixed. In FY25, it used highwall mining technology and produced 0.53 MMT from it. The company also uses Powered Support Longwall Technology in underground mines and runs 520+ heavy mining machines.

Coal Reserves and Washeries

BCCL owns 1,495.4 million tonnes of coal reserves, including 1,140.7 MMT of coking coal, the largest in India. It also runs five coal washeries and is developing three more with a combined capacity of 7 MTPA to supply cleaner coal for the steel industry.

Competition

BCCL makes up 58.5 percent of India’s coking coal production. Its main rival is Central Coalfields (CCL), which produced 31 percent of India’s coking coal in FY25. Another player, Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd (MCL), focuses only on non-coking coal.

About Bharat Coking Coal

Established in 1972 and based in Dhanbad, Jharkhand, BCCL is India’s largest coking coal producer. The company was awarded the Miniratna status in 2014. Coking coal, used mainly in steelmaking, made up 96 percent of BCCL’s total coal production in FY25.
