Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): A doctor was allegedly assaulted by a patient’s attendants at the Emergency Department of AIIMS-Bhopal on Monday afternoon.

The incident occurred while the doctor was on duty in the Yellow Triage Critical Area at the premises. The attendants of a patient named Santosh Kumar (age 39, male) reportedly engaged in physical and verbal abuse — tearing the doctor’s shirt, attempting to strike the face, and grabbing the doctor by the neck.

The assaulting attendant was caught by the security guards and police personnel posted at AIIMS Bhopal and was handed over to the Bagsewaniya Police Station.

A FIR has been registered under the Madhya Pradesh Protection of Medicare Service Persons and Medicare Service Institutions (Prevention of Violence and Damage to Property) Act, 2008.

Under this Act, the offender may face 3 to 5 years of imprisonment and a fine ranging from Rs 50,000 to Rs 2,00,000 if convicted.

According to sources,  patient was on ventilator and he was shifted from other hospital to AIIMS. Doctor who was on duty, commented that there is thin chances for survival. It provoked attendant who manhandled the doctor.

AIIMS’s Dr Ketan Mehra said, “ Even after assault, AIIMS is providing best treatment to patient. Measures are being reinforced to ensure safety within the hospital premises.

This incident joins a growing number of attacks on medical professionals across the country and has intensified calls for stronger laws and comprehensive security protocols.”
