Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): In the aftermath of the Guna well tragedy, the Director General of State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) has decided to issue fresh instructions to district collectors to ensure better coordination with other departments during emergencies.
District collectors, being the first point of response in any crisis, are the primary responsible for initiating response actions whenever an incident requiring SDRF intervention is reported.
Following the tragic Guna incident, in which five people had died while rescuing a calf from a well on June 17, several shortcomings like lack of coordination between the departments came to light during the rescue operation.
Officials said that when the SDRF team reached the spot, a large crowd had gathered and the team had to work hard to disperse the crowd before starting the rescue. Local police arrived late, at the spot and when the victims were finally pulled out of the well, no ambulance was available to take them to the hospital.
DG SDRF Pragya Richa Shrivastava told Free Press that a fresh letter is being issued to all collectors, directing them to stay alert and immediately notify relevant departments when a disaster alert is received. This will ensure a coordinated response that can help minimize the impact of such incidents.
The DG said that during monsoon season, the administration needs to be extra vigilant.
270 DRC monitoring water bodies
In all 270 Disaster Response Centres are operating across the state round the clock during the rainy season. Each centre is manned by two SDRF personnel who continuously monitor bridges, water bodies, and other vulnerable areas prone to water-related disasters.
