OPENLY SOLD: Banned Modified Bike Silencers In Bhopal
These silencers, which are known for their loud and disruptive noise, remain popular among bike enthusiasts but their sale and use are illegal.

Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): Despite strict provisions under Motor Vehicles Act, banned modified bike silencers that exceed the permissible noise limit of 80 decibels are being sold openly in many shops across the city.
These silencers, which are known for their loud and disruptive noise, remain popular among bike enthusiasts but their sale and use are illegal. A leading vehicle accessories shop owner said he had been selling modified silencers for over a decade. “We offer a variety of silencers, with prices ranging from ?1,200 to ?3,500,” he said, showcasing a wide range of stock.
Similarly, another shop manager said he sold about 4-5 modified silencers weekly. “These silencers can be easily removed from bikes to avoid detection by the police,” he said. Traffic police officials, however, have warned of stringent penalties for violators.
Additional DCP (traffic) Vikram Raghuwanshi told Free Press that using modified silencers was illegal and subject to fine of up to ?10,000. “Traffic police regularly take action against violators. It is also the responsibility of police from station areas to act against shops selling these silencers,” he said.
Authorities have urged residents to inform about shops selling such silencers and have warned bike owners of severe penalties if caught using them. Meanwhile, the lack of consistent action against the sellers raises questions about enforcement and accountability in curbing this ongoing issue.
Last crackdown
The last major crackdown occurred in 2023 when a police raid in MP Nagar area resulted in ?1-lakh fine imposed on a shop found selling these banned silencers.
However, since then, there appears to have been little enforcement, allowing the illegal trade to flourish.
