Betul (Madhya Pradesh): A 16-year-old boy drowned in the Kanhaiya Kol waterfall in Madhya Pradesh's Betul on Sunday while taking a selfie.
The deceased was identified as Piyush Parihar who had gone for a picnic with his friends when the tragic incident occurred.
According to the reports, Piyush slipped while standing near the edge of the waterfall and was swept away by the strong wave.
The incident led to an rescue operation that continued overnight. On Monday morning, the State Disaster Emergency Response Force (SDERF) team along with local divers and villagers, resumed the search.
After hours of searching through the deep water, Piyush's body was found trapped between rocks under the waterfall.
Khedi Chowki in-charge Rakesh Sareem confirmed that the body has been recovered and sent to the district hospital for post-mortem. The rescue team faced significant difficulties due to the depth and force of the water which made the operation challenging.
Piyush was a class 10 student and resident of Bhavani Mohalla in Betul Bazaar. He was the only son of Parasram Parihar. His death has left the family and local community under grievance. Residents have raised concerns over the lack of safety measures at tourist spots.
Locals have urged the officials to make restrictions and have proper safety protocols at waterfalls and similar areas to prevent such tragedies in the future.
