Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): A four-year-old boy from Madhya Pradesh's Shivpuri, was severely injured in a street dog attack and had to undergo surgery at Gwalior’s Jayarogya Hospital on Friday.
The dog bit the child on his face, causing a deep wound above his eye, measuring 10 cm long and 2 cm wide.
According to the boy’s father, Suvendra Chirad, the attack happened in front of his wife. "The dog had its jaws on my son's face. If my wife hadn’t intervened, the dog might have dragged him away,” he said. The attack left the child’s ear hanging and his face bloodied.
Doctors at the trauma center initially stitched the wounds with 15 sutures before referring the child to the Pediatric Surgery Department at Super Specialty Hospital. There, a two-hour-long surgery was performed. Surgeons gave him around 150 stitches to save his eye and repair facial damage. The child is currently recovering in the medicine ward.
Raising cases of dog bites
Meanwhile, Gwalior is witnessing a rise in dog bite cases. In just four days, 256 patients sought treatment for dog bites in three major hospitals — 103 at JAH, 96 at Murar District Hospital, and 57 at Civil Hospital Hazira.
Veterinary experts say the aggression may be due to seasonal changes, as summer is a breeding period for dogs. Residents are advised not to provoke stray dogs and to keep water bowls outside to avoid agitating them.
