Jabalpur (Madhya Pradesh): A man was arrested for allegedly posing as a doctor, treating patients without a medical degree and also trying to convert them by distributing religious booklets, in Madhya Pradesh’s Jabalpur, the police said on Wednesday.

After several complaints from local residents, a Health Department team raided Dashrath Prasad Bairagi’s small clinic in the Ranjhi police-station area.

According to officials, they found him prescribing allopathic medicines even though he holds no recognised medical qualification. He was then taken into custody on the spot.

‘Bairagi distributed religious pamphlets’

Additionally, leaders of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal claimed that Bairagi gave patients religious pamphlets containing offensive remarks about Hindu deities. They accused him of using medical treatment as a cover to persuade people to change their religion.

Investigations on

Additional Superintendent of Police Anand Kaladgi confirmed the arrest and said the clinic has been sealed. Meanwhile, the officers are examining the seized medicines and pamphlets.

“We are investigating both the illegal practice and the conversion allegations,” he added.

Whereas, a local VHP coordinator Sumit Singh Thakur has called for tough action and said, “Treating patients without a license is dangerous in itself. Distributing insulting literature to convert them is even more serious. We want the strongest charges possible.”

At present, police are questioning Bairagi and checking whether anyone was harmed by his treatments.

The Health Department may file separate charges for practicing medicine illegally, while investigators are gathering evidence on the alleged conversion plot.

For now, the clinic remains closed, and residents have been advised to seek treatment only from licensed medical professionals.
