Country Liquor Consumption Dips, Foreign Liquor Rises In Madhya Pradesh
This has been disclosed in the latest liquor consumption figures of the excise department.

Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): In comparison to previous financial year, consumption of country liquor has reduced in the state. However, consumption of foreign liquor (both spirit and malt) has increased significantly and remains at an all-time high.
This has been disclosed in the latest liquor consumption figures of the excise department.
The figures say that in financial year 2022-23, consumption of country liquor stood at 1448.22 lakh proof litres and it was the all-time high consumption figure of country liquor. However, in financial year 2023-24, it’s consumption declined to 1425.28 lakh proof litres. If record of previous years is seen then consumption of country liquor was 1020.38 lakh proof litres in 2021-22, 899.16 lakh proof litres in 2020-21, 1130.18 lakh proof litres in 2019-20 etc.
As far as consumption of foreign liquor (Spirit & Malt) is concerned, its consumption has increased significantly in comparison to the previous financial year.
The consumption of foreign liquor in Spirit category remained 744. 90 Lakh Proof Litres in financial year 2023-24 in comparison to 684.69 Lakh Proof Litres of 2022-23. If the figures of previous years are seen then 471.03 lakh proof litres of foreign liquor (spirit) was consumed in 2021-22, 420.65 lakh proof litres in 2020-21, 583.48 lakh proof litres in 2019-20. In other words, consumption of foreign liquor (spirit category) in 2023-24 remained all-time high in the state.
As far as consumption of foreign liquor in Malt category is concerned, its consumption figure in 2023-24 was 1933.35 lakh bulk litres in comparison to 1909.18 lakh bulk litres in 2022-23. The previous year’s records say that 962.19 lakh bulk litre foreign liquor (Malt) was consumed in 2021-22, 840.77 lakh bulk litres in 2020-21, 1099.67 lakh bulk litres in 2019-20 etc. In the meantime, beer production increased to 2358.65 lakh bulk litres.
Export and import of liquor
As far as export and import of liquor is concerned, in financial year 2023-24, import of India Made Foreign Liquor was 23.54 lakh proof litres in comparison to 17.89 lakh proof litres. The export of India Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) stood at 304.43 lakh proof litres in 2023-24 in comparison to 166.69 lakh proof litres in 2022-23.
Income through liquor
The income through liquor in 2023-24 was Rs 13,590.15 crore which is the highest ever. In corresponding financial year 2022-23, income through liquor was Rs 13,005 crore followed by Rs 10,395.69 crore in 2021-22, Rs 9,520.96 crore in 2020-21 and Rs 1,077.29 crore in 2019-20.
