Cheetahs Chase, Hunt Prey In Gandhi Sagar Sanctuary

Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): The two male cheetahs released in Gandhi Sagar sanctuary in Mandsaur district seem to have adapted well to their new surroundings. Since their release, they have killed three wild animals including a blue bull.

Living in open range now, they were translocated from Kuno National Park this month and it was first interstate translocation of cheetahs in the history. Now, Gandhi Sagar Sanctuary has become second home to cheetahs.

“So far, they are doing well in open range of the sanctuary. They have made three kills including a deer and one blue bull. It’s a thrill to see that both of them have adjusted to new environment,” a Gandhi Sagar sanctuary official said. At present, there is sufficient prey base.

Preparations underway for more

As four more cheetahs are likely to be brought to Gandhi Sagar Sanctuary, preparations are underway to accommodate more cheetahs in future. There is one quarantine enclosure and three big enclosures in the sanctuary. It was on April 20 that cheetahs Prabhash and Pavak were released in the sanctuary’s open range.

At the time of their release, chief minister Mohan Yadav said four more cheetahs would be brought from Botswana and would be released in the sanctuary.
