Bhopal Municipal Corporation Imposes ₹75,000 Fine On 2 Contaminated Namkeen Units

Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Saturday took action against two factories making salted snacks as they were operating in unhygienic conditions in Chhola area. The BMC imposed a fine of Rs 75,000 on them.

A team of BMC health department conducted a surprise inspection on Saturday and found the factories using illegal wood-coal furnaces and preparing namkeen in unhygienic conditions.

According to BMC officials, action has been taken against Mohan Namkeen and Shanvi Namkeen located in ward 76. They were fined Rs 50,000 and Rs 25,000 respectively. Officials discovered the use of tandoor-bhatti despite ban and found the food being prepared in dirty surroundings. Operators have been warned of legal consequences if furnaces are used again.

Assistant health officer Ramratan Lohiya, incharge of Zone 17, said BMC would undertake inspections and ensure that food safety standards were maintained.

Ban violation

The use of wood and coal furnaces is prohibited following Supreme Court directives. Last year, BMC had shut down over 90 such furnaces in the city.

However, the lapse in inspections has led to their resurgence, particularly in old city’s Kaji Camp area where several hotels reportedly continue to violate the ban without facing penalties.
