Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): Riya Jain from Bhopal won the 3rd prize in the Ideas4Life initiative organised by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), Government of India, under the theme ‘Say No to Plastic Pollution’.
Riya was feted by minister of environment, forest and climate change, chief minister of Delhi, environment minister of Delhi and deputy governor of Delhi at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi on Thursday
She won the award for her idea titled ‘Greeniva – Biodegradable Food Container,’ which focuses on sustainable cutlery made from agricultural waste including sugarcane bagasse and banana leftovers, as an eco-friendly alternative to single-use plastics. She made cutlery and innovative food boxes.
She got this idea after seeing the increase in plastic pollution and the inconvenience caused eating in plastic food boxes and packets. She developed it further as a part of her college course project. She is doing Bachelor of Designing from IIITDM Jabalpur and just completed her 3rd year.
Around 1384 students, research scholars and educators from IITs, NITs, IIITs, ICMR and other premier institutions participated in this competition. In the final round, top 10 ideas were selected and were called for presentation in Jan 2025. The final results were announced in May 2025.
